YouTube can keep me occupied any time boredom sets in. There are nights when I spend hours looking up bootleg footage of my favorite musicians in concert, or browsing through animated shorts. I watch the “Free Hugs Campaign” video about once a month to renew my face in humanity in general. I hadn’t considered even considered that I might be able to find beauty advice there until browsing absently on MakeUpAlley when I saw a member mention that she had made a YouTube video of her beauty techniques to achieve a certain look. Be still my beating heart! I rushed right to YouTube, and what to my wondering eyes should appear—blushes and rouges and lipstick that won’t smear!
Of course, there is a catch. You do have to know a little bit what you are doing here, because there are some truly hideous tutorials – a good rule of thumb is to make sure they have a sizeable number of views, at least 1000 or more seems to be a good general guideline. The girls on the “Face of the Day” Board on MakeUpAlley are also a good resource, as some of the truly wonderful makeup tutorials come directly from the ladies of this board.
My first choice of great YouTube Beauty Picks is KatiePuckrikSmells. Katie reviews perfumes, running the spectrum from mainstream to niche fragrances. Her reviews are charming and brief, giving you an edited overview to help you decide if it’s worth sniffing out. Katie is well versed in the perfume industry notes and lingo, so her reviews are able to keep the interest of both the fragrant newbie and the seasoned collector. Check out her review for one of my favorite scents here.
The next great find on YouTube is the member pursebuzz, who does great hair tutorials and has amassed quite a following. Not only is she adorable, but she does a terrific job of explaining throughout her videos what she is doing and what products to use. I personally love her vintage hair videos, and find them easy to follow and apply the techniques.
My next pick for truly gorgeous makeup tips is MakeupGeekTV on YouTube. Her tutorials are very professionally done, and include fun tutorials inspired by flowers, candy, and movie stars. Her tutorials are wonderful in helping those who don’t have the skills or products learn application and how to substitute their products for higher end brands.
For those of us who need help in the most basic of makeup skills, I’d recommend checking out the basics tutorials from pixiwoo. I could spend hours listening to her English accent! I love the Bobbi Brown Bridal makeup tutorial they do here.
YouTuber Panacea81 has become such a runaway success on YouTube that she now has her own line of makeup available at Sephora. One of my favorite tutorials from her is the Megan Fox look. I’m not so misguided that I actually think I might ever look like Megan Fox, but it’s refreshing to know that even she needs a little help in the morning.
